Are You Training Outdoors?

Rock climbing

If the answer to that question is no, then my question is why the hell not?!

Training outside in nature is not only refreshing, it also changes the pace of workouts and takes you back to nature. I will train outdoors not only to get a change from always being in the gym but it’s a mix of hard training and relaxation. I can’t explain the feeling I get after going through a hard workout on the beach or on the trails. Afterwards I’ll just sit there and relax and think about things and because my mind is so clear it’s when I come up with some of my best ideas.

What Do Fitness Experts Think About Crossfit?

I just came back from the Perform Better Summit last night and I can’t say how much of a great experience and incredible event they put on again. Chris Poirier and the crew do it every time!

I’m going to be posting my favorite lectures and have a more thorough review of the Summit later on…..but in the meantime I would like to leave you with a question (and answers) that came up in the Q & A part of the Summit that was related to what the lecturers thought about Crossfit.

Needless to say I had to pull the flipcam out! You are going ot have to turn up the volume but it will be well worth it. Dos has the funniest answer of all time, that s@*t still cracks me up!

4th Of July Training

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July and got to spend time with their family while being grateful for our freedom.

Just like everyone else I had a bunch of places to be on the 4th from spending time with my wife to hitting up a family BBQ and then meeting up with friends to watch the fireworks at Coulon Park. Because of that I made sure that I got everyone in the gym early that morning to get our scheduled training session in. One of the things that takes the Hocevar Performance athletes to the next level is the mindset of no excuses. Everything in life worth getting takes sacrifice and if you’re not willing to do that then maybe you don’t want to achieve that goal as much as you though you did. There were people that sacrificed their lives and future so that we could have what we have, yet there is so many people that just whine and don’t do anything about the situation they are in only to make excuses about how unfortunate things only happen to them!

The Matrix Of Training - High School Athletes

It’s crazy that there is more great information on training out there than at any other time, yet it seems that people are doing more dumb shit in gyms than ever before! Maybe there is too much information, maybe people are getting paralysis by analysis, maybe everyone is looking for “the next big thing” and a shortcut, maybe it’s just a bunch of wussies and hard work has become extinct or it could just be that someone you trust is giving you crappy advice. Wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened.

This is happening in every population but I want to focus on the “wandering souls” of high school athletics….

What Is Your Weakness?

You are only as strong as your weakest link, especially when it comes to athletic performance. So can you honestly say that you are focusing on and improving your weaknesess?

A good friend of mine who is also a great basketball player had never really payed much attention to strength training, mobility, basically enhancing performance through other areas other than the actual sport specific training. I had warned him that it is a mistake and that it would hurt him in the long run but he replied that he has never had issues and that he was feeling fine and playing well. This was all true, but all the dysfunction adds up……

This year he has had multiple injuries and he is dealing with a a chronic injury that is putting his career on hold. It is all a result of years and years of repetitive movement, minimal, un-serious off season training and not paying attention to his weaknesses. This is actually making me emotional just talking about it because I love this guy (he is one of my best friends) and I feel for him but he knows he needs to get his mind together. It is not too late for him but it has literally taken a full season out of his career (and hopefully not more). I know of players that have had to end their career because of similar issues!

Don’t let that happen to you no matter what your profession is! Make your weakness your strength and continue to amplify the strengths that you have. Yeah, I know it’s hard but do you want to be mediocore or do you want to be great, do you want a short carreer where you ask yourself if you could have done more or do you want to look back at all the great things you have achieved giving it your all and not letting things happen by chance? If you are not willing to bust your ass then you shouldn’t be reading this anyway!

What is your weakness? How are you going to make it a strength?

Teddy Roosevelt once said: “You can’t choose your potential, but you can choose to fulfill it.” You can’t fulfill your full potential if you are not working on your weaknesses!

P.S.  Sometimes it takes someone to help you identify your weakness and also help you fix it. Be open to constructive criticism, it wil only help you out.
