Thoughts and…Some More Thoughts

1. First of I would like to congratulate a couple of Hocevar Performance athletes. Armin Basic won the state dicuss meet with a throw of just under 176 feet and then finished second in the shotput with 57.8 feet, both were PR’s!

Matt Fields (Charlotte Stone Crabs) had a great couple of games, hitting 3 home runs and having 7 RBI against Clearwater this past week. He is among the top 3 in the league in HR’s and RBI. Watch out for Matt as he is one of the most powerful hitters in the game!

2. I go through a bunch of books, manuals and dvd’s related to training and I thought I would start reviewing some of the good one’s I watch (yes, unfortunately I go through some crap as well). I just got done watching Robert Dos Remedios CHAOS Sport Speed Training and I have to say its really good. It gives the rational behind the training in a lecture format and shows tons of examples. If you play or coach basketball, football or any other sport that requires speed and agility and is unpredictable, then this DVD will definitely help you improve performance.

Hocevar Performance In The News

Last week was a busy and eventful week for me, from attending the Fitness Business Summit 09 to appearing in the newspaper and then hosting Andrea Du Cane for a great workshop here in Seattle (her first one here).

As I mentioned before, its really important to keep improving your own education and go to seminar/conferences, mentorships, etc. but I find that you can learn the most from the leaders in the industry after hours when the event is over and you can pick their brain (while having a beer off course).

Are You Investing In Yourself?

This weekend I was at the Fitness Business Summit 09 in Anaheim, California and it was an absolute blast! I flew in on Thursday and spent the day at Newport Beach just chilling and riding the bike around (it’s been forever since I had done that) and catching some sunshine.

Just like any other conference, it costs money for the event, hotel, travel and expenses. Most people I talked to about going to the event were mentioning how they can’t handle such a cost. I never really looked at it as a cost but rather as an investment. I can say that it was easily worth ten times what I paid for it. The information, motivation and presenters were incredible, while the networking and relationships forged are priceless.

The Matrix Of Training - High School Athletes

It’s crazy that there is more great information on training out there than at any other time, yet it seems that people are doing more dumb shit in gyms than ever before! Maybe there is too much information, maybe people are getting paralysis by analysis, maybe everyone is looking for “the next big thing” and a shortcut, maybe it’s just a bunch of wussies and hard work has become extinct or it could just be that someone you trust is giving you crappy advice. Wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened. 

This is happening in every population but I want to focus on the “wandering souls” of high school athletics….

Art of The Deload - More Than Just Training (Part II)

Last post we focused on explaining what deloading is, how important it is and showing some ways how you can incorporate it into your program. This time I’ll talk about deloading more than just training, but using it in life. If you haven’t read part I, you can read it here.

Just like training, we tend to get out of balance and either do too little or too much when it comes to work, relationships, etc. I will touch on the one thing that most people in America including myself don’t do enough of - rest and relax. I don’t even want to go into the statistics about how much vacation people take (and how much they do not use?! crazy) on average, how many hours they work, etc. Sound like you?

The Art of The Deload - More Than Just Training (Part I)

As I write this post I am going to be upfront and honest. I admit that I need to work on “deloading” in more than one area of my life. Part of the reason I’m writing about this subject is because it helps me practice what I preach a lot more. I can’t count the times I have not had a deload when I should have, whether it came to training, work, relationships or life in general.

Years ago I actually had real OTS - overtraining syndrome (and I’m not talking about the “overtraining” you hear so many people whining about when they’re tired and sore for a week) to a point where I couldn’t sleep, had no motivation and felt depressed most of the time. I was in labs getting tested all the time and all they could tell me was that my body shut down from all the stress (physical and mental). It took me months to get back to training on a normal level. All of this was because I had trained non stop and lived life a 100 miles per hour without having any type of deload.

Better Movement = Better Athlete

When I was young all the way up to the age of 15 I played just about every sport from soccer, basketball, judo, tennis, track (300 m, long jump) while also trying to participate in every activity that included a competition or a challenge. I would regularly go skiing, swimming, hiking, etc. with my family and friends and I would spend most of my time outside either practicing a sport or doing some sort of physical activity with my friends (sometimes this activity also got me in a lot of trouble).

No Rules Training and No Excuses

Before I say anything let me give you a friendly word of advice, never drink a can of Spike energy drink after 8 p.m.! It’s been a long day and I’m up at 2 a.m. looking like a damn rave junkie that popped an e-pill. At the same time, if you are an entrepreneur it could become your best friend.

Warp Speed Fat Loss for Athletes - Part II

Everyone loves fast results, don’t you? 

As much as I am a firm believer of hard work, commitment and persistency, I also believe that getting people to see results fast keeps them motivated and makes them believe in what you’re doing. This is also the reason I have incorporated the Warp Speed Fat Loss meal plans with the athletes that come through our door and need to drop weight and/or body fat as fast as possible.

If I get a baseball athlete (example) in the off season and I have 4 months to get him to the next level of performance, yet I need him to drop 15-20 lbs, then it’s a huge plus for me to be able to do that as fast as possible so that we can then focus the remainder of the training towards their next season (strength, power, conditioning, imbalances, etc…).

Here is another case where Warp Speed came in handy as we put Dennis on the program and modified the training to best suit his fat loss goals. I knew that he would do great but I have to say I was a little surprised myself as we checked the final numbers. Dennis went from 212 lbs on day 1 to 192.3 lbs on day 28! On top of that he is moving better and has improved his reactvity while also getting better number in certain core lifts. Not bad for 28 days.

The Last 4 Weeks

I am trying to reintroduce sleep back into my life as there hasn’t been much in the past 6 weeks. The day just doesn’t have enough hours with all the things that are on my to do list. I have been delegating but it’s still crazy. I would love to believe that it will get calmer soon but I know that’s not the case.

As the Hocevar Performance Gym is getting busier and I am still training a lot of hours at Vision Quest, running a business, there is little (that would mean none) time for much R & R.  There has been a ton of good things happening though and that makes me foregt about being tired and rejuvenates my spirit (yes I said spirit!). Here is a bunch of different things that has been going on that I wanted to mention, from the new look of the Hocevar Performance Gym to some transformation pics of our athletes.
